CREA+BIRD – Creative Sustainability Education Inspired by Birds

Short description

CREA+BIRD is an Erasmus+ cooperation project bringing together universities, environmental NGOs, schools and teacher educators from Finland, Italy, Slovenia and Romania. The project develops creative approaches to sustainability education, using birds as guides and nature connectors.

By combining scientific knowledge, cultural stories and environmental education, CREA+BIRD strengthens sustainability competences, active citizenship and learners’ connection to nature.

Project duration: December 2024 – November 2027

What is cool about this project?

Birds connect people across borders, cultures and landscapes. They inspire stories, reveal environmental change and provide a unique lens for exploring sustainability. CREA+BIRD brings together educators, researchers and conservation experts to create engaging and action-oriented learning methods inspired by birds. The project combines ecological knowledge, cultural perspectives and creative learning while supporting the implementation of the European GreenComp Sustainability Competence Framework.

International collaboration across Europe

The partnership combines expertise in education, research, environmental communication and bird conservation.

Finland: Finnish Institute for Educational Research (Coordinator) and Finnish Association of Nature and Environment Schools
Italy: University of Bolzano and Adamello-Brenta Natural Park
Romania: West University of Timisoara and Milvus Group Bird and Nature Protection Association
Slovenia: University of Ljubljana and BirdLife Slovenia The project also works with schools and environmental education organisations in all participating countries to test and improve new educational approaches.

Key activities

Developing new pedagogical frameworks for sustainability education.
Creating bird-themed educational toolkits and learning materials.
Facilitating international knowledge exchange through workshops and seminars.
Piloting and refining methods in schools across Europe.

Why birds?

Birds connect ecosystems, cultures and communities. They help learners explore biodiversity, climate change and sustainability while strengthening their relationship with nature and their sense of responsibility for the future.

Lintujen vuosi – SYKSY

Lintujen vuosi tutustuttaa lintujen monimuotoiseen elämään niin muutto- kuin paikkalintujenkin kautta. Monialainen oppimateriaali on suunnattu 3.–6. luokkalaisille ja toimii Linturetkikoneen kanssa. Teemareppu on koottu CREA+BIRD-hankkeessa.
