Northern Raven

One of the largest and most intelligent songbirds, often associated with wild and remote areas.

Identification

A large black bird with a heavy bill and shaggy throat feathers. In flight, it has long wings and a wedge-shaped tail. Produces deep croaking calls.

Habitat

The Northern Raven inhabits mountains, forests, coasts, and open landscapes. Avoids dense urban areas but can adapt.

Nutrition

Omnivorous. Eats carrion, small animals, insects, grains, and human food waste.

Breeding

Builds large nests on cliffs or tall trees. Lays 3–7 eggs. Forms long-term pair bonds.

Migration

Mostly resident, especially adults.

Distribution

Widespread across the Northern Hemisphere.

Status and conservation

Globally Least Concern (LC). Populations are stable or increasing in many regions.
