Description

Fruticose lichen.

Distribution in Finland

Common across the country.

Growing form

Size

5–15 cm.

Thallus

Erect, losely attached to the substratum, dark or reddish brown, lower surface paler.  Lobes canaliculate and glossy, rarely tubular, 2–10 mm wide. Pseudocyphellae abundant on the lower surface, elongated or dot-like.

Fruitbody

Brown apothecia fairly common, on upper surfaces of broad lobe tips. Conidiomata usually abundant on lobe margins.

Green alga (Trebouxia).

Habitat

Open and dry heath forests, rock outcrops and sandy areas, subalpine heaths.

Substrate

On mineral and peaty soil, rotten logs, rarely epiphytic (mainly on basal trunks of large junipers).
